Saturday Matchup: Club Cafe versus Club Cafe!

That's right.   We have reached Saturday, which is a huge goal for every team that comes to this championship.  Only 8 teams remain!

But now we have to play the other Boston B team sponsored by Club Cafe, the Angels.

It is going to be a great game, but sadly  one of us will have to knock our sister team our if the tournament!

Gotta leave the hotel at 630 for the 7:50 am game.  Ouch!

Friday - Game 1 Details

Crew vs. Long Beach Rounders 2.0

As luck would have it, we would be facing a team that we already played during "Round Robin" (or pool play, as some call it).   This is the team that we beat 16-12.  The Crew would ve teh visitors for the first time in "Double Elim".

The game started out well, as the Crew got two runs thanks to a big 2 RBI double by Kevin Lalli, which plated Sandro and Chris.   LB got nothing in their half of the inning.  The Crew went down 1-2-3 in the second, and Long Beach POURED IT ON, batting around the lineup and scoring 5 runs (it could have been worse - as they stranded the bases loaded).  Forgive the self indulgence (I would do this if it were someone else, really!!), but there were two key plays in the inning.  With 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, the #3 hitter hit a grounder in the hole between shortstop and 3rd base.   With no play at first and seeing the runner from 3rd base take off for home, Sandro  snared the grounder and threw on-the-run to home, where Brad Mayeux awaited.   Now we had the runner in a rundown, and Brad flipped it to Russ, who applied the tag for out #2.  Now, the cleanup batter was up with runners at 1st and 2nd. He hit a wicked shot up the middle which Sandro did a fully extended dive for, grabbed on one hop and flipped to 2nd for the inning ending force out. Like I said, it could have been MUCH worse than just 5 runs.

The Crew came right back and cored 4 runs of their own, powered by a Russ Friedman triple, singles by Sandro and Chris, a sac fly by Kevin Lalli and then a 2 run BOMB by Ryan Delabuerre to right field.   WAY OUT OF HERE!   LA LUNA!!!  In their half, Long beach got nothing, and the 6-5, Crew.  The Crew then scratched across a single run in the 4th inning, and Long BEach got 2 of their own, tying the game at 7.

5th inning, the Crew gets two runs thanks to a big double by Brett Akers, who had a nice day at the plate!  That boy really "Brings his A game" in double elimination play!  Long beach gets nothing, and the Crew leads by 2 going into the 6th.   There were about 10 minutes left to play.  The Crew got a single run, scoring Brad who led off with a double. But truth be told, we knew we needed more than that. a long inning with a bunch of runs would sure have been nice.   Up by the 3 runs, teh Crew let up 3 runs to Long Beach to tie the game, 10-10.

In the final inning, the Crew scored 2 runs. How?  Oh yeah. Its that "Ryan Dela" kid again!   Burke leads off with an out.  Kevin gets a big TRIPLE off the fence.  Next up.  Ryan "Slugger" Delabuerre.  You know what happens next. 2 run MOON SHOT over the right-center field fence!  But that is all the Crew would muster.  We had a feeling it might not be enough.

The bottom of the 7th went like this:  A single by the first batter, followed by a ball to left-center that our VISCIOUS scorer, Paul Caruso, ruled an error.   Ryan did not get a great read on it, and it went over his head. But that is a TOUGH scorers decision!!!  A run scored.   The next batter was walked, putting runners on 1st and third. The next batter got a hit, and now game was tied.   We got an infield out, but now runners were on 1st and 3rd.  We intentionally walked the #2 hitter to load the bases. But the number 3 hitter hit a fly ball to left which scored the winning run.

Long Beach wins, 13-12.

Game 2
Crew versus Porland Assault

Here we go again!  We have to play another team that we faced in Round Robin.   Unlike Long beach (whom the Crew beat), Portland beat the Crew in Round Robin 16-11 (that was the "microscopic strike zone" game).  This game had a few hard-to-watch (HTW) moments in it.  More to follow...

Once again, the Crew started out hot. a single by Sandro, and then a fielders choice by Chris.   1 out.  Next, Kevin Lalli hits a double, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd.    And here comes than man again...Ryan D.    you'll never believe this.  Ryan swings and misses for the second out!!!!    Naaa..i'm just playing.  Ryan hit a TOWERING SHOT over the fence for a 3 run home run!   Damn- that boy has some bat speed!!!  But the Crew was not done. Brett then gets a triple, and Rob brings him in with a sacrifice fly.  The Crew scores 4 times!

HTW moment #1.   Leadoff batter for Portland.  Fly ball to Chris Burke who has not misplayed or dropped a fly ball since middle school.   He is under it, and then you can see he is having trouble with the sun.    He starts to shy away a bit, knowing the ball was about to reach him.  the ball KNOCKS THE HAT off of his head and rolls to the fence!  (The sun was BRUTAL in right-canter at that time of day)  Thankfully, only that one man scored!

In the second, the Crew managed to NOT score despite a single and a triple.   A bit of bad luck here.   Tim leads off with a hit.  Russell comes up.  HTW moment #2.    Russ hits a line drive that appears to be clearing the shortstop, but the player jumps high to catch it!   Timmy was like 6 steps towards 2nd base already. he stops, stumbles, and dives back into first base where he was called out.    Timmy was livid. The people near the play say the first baseman did not have his foot on the bag as the throw came over, but it was too late.  Double Play!   Next Sandro hits a triple, but Chris Burke made an out and the Crew went scoreless in the 2nd inning.    But so did Portland!  But not in a normal way!  Portland got a single, a walk, and another single to load the bases with NO OUTS.   Last 3 batters coming up.   First batter.  POP UP TO TIMMY AT THE PITCHERS MOUND! 1 out. Next batter STRIKES OUT LOOKING!   The last batter lines out to short.  They scored NO RUNS.  Incredible.

The Crew got 2 in the 3rd with no major fanfare (a walk and 3 singles) plus a sac fly.  Portland got 1 run in their half, cutting the lead to 6-2.   The Crew uncharacteristically (in this tournament anyway) went two consecutive innings without scoring.  Portland got 0 and 1 in their next two innings, cutting the lead to 6-3.

Top of the 6th.  A quick out is made, and then Tim and Russ get singles, bringing up the top of the order.   Sandro, who has been "en fuego" hitting all tournament, hit an easy grounder to second base.   Flip to short for one...   HTW moment #3.  Sandro, REFUSING to be doubled up and wear the goat horns, take what would KINDLY be called a head-first slide in to first base.  Those who were at the crime scene called it an ugly face-plant belly-flop! Either way, Sandro was safe...and VERY dirty!  Still no runs home, and two outs.  Runners on the corners. And then the Crew got SEVEN runs with two outs! How? Burke double, scoring Tim and Sandro. Kevin Single.  Ryan triple. Brett and Rob and Brad, single - single - single.   And then a really great moment was when Mark pinch hit Jon Pronovost. Jon had not had a hit yet in the tournament, and delivered an RBI double!!  You go, JP!!!

Ahead by 10 going into the last inning. Should be easy, right?   First batter - lazy fly out to left field.  Next batter hits an easy chopper to short, but Sandro makes an uncharacteristic throwing error.  Next batter hits a fly ball to right-center.  HTW moment #3.  Chris positions himself in the perfect spot, but LOSES THE BALL in the sun again.  It goes over his head by a few feet and rolls to the fence!   next batter hits a ball to third, which takes a really bad hop and hits Russ in the shoulder. Tough play...  The next batter hits a fly ball to Right-Center.   HTW moment #4.   Same as number 3!   Chris just COULD NOT SEE IT in the sun, and it went over his head again.    Now, they had 4 runs in with just 1 out.   Oh boy.   There was a runner on third base.  Everyone in the park know it. Well, except for ONE person.  The next batter hits a knuckle ball liner to third.  Russ jumps to get it and, apparently quite pleased at his effort, starts to THROW THE BALL AROUND THE INFIELD as if noone was on base!   You should have seen the surprised look in Brett's eye as the ball comes flying over from Russell.    Coach McGrath was seen throwing his bottle of water, and Sandro nearly had a brain aneurism at shortstop!   In all truth, no damage was done - and it give us something to tease Russ about for the next, say, 10-15 years!!!   The final batter comes up and flies out to Ryan D (who was the clear offensive MVP of this day!)

Crew wins, 13-7

Friday, game 2

Crew played Portland assault, who beat the Crew during round robin 16-11.

This time, without the microscopic strike zone umpire, the crew won 13-7.

It was very tight at 6-3 going into the 7th.  The crew was leading.  The crew scored 7 times (5 of those runs with two outs) to go  ahead 13-3.  Portland got 4 in their half...and the crew won 13-7

Next up, the club cafe angels...

Yes, we have to play our sister team from Boston!

There are only 8 teams left in the tourney now. Top 8 baby!!

Friday, game 1

Double ELim - Thursday Details

Crew vs. Phoenix Trojans

The Crew played a very steady game, scoring runs in all 5 innings.  Phoenix got 1 in the top of the first, and The Crew answered with 1 run to tie it up.  Phoenix scored one run in teh 2nd inning, but it could have been way worse!    A lead-off walk was followed by a single.   An out was made, followed by another walk.  Bases loaded, one out with the top of the order coming up.   The batter hit a hard shot up the middle which shortstop Sandro dives for.  he snares the ball, flips it to second baseman Breet from his kness, and Brett turns a throws a strike to first - where Rob Papa was in a full split!   The Boston fans cheering on teh Crew were really stoked about that inning ending 6-4-3 double play!  In the bottom of the inning, the Crew managed to get 2 runs from the bottom of their order, aided by hits from Brad and Tim,  a Sac Fly from Russell and then hits by Sandro and Chris.

In the third, Phoenix once again scored 1 run - but the Crew got 2 CRUCIAL runs.  Here is how it happened.  1st batter out. Then Brett reached on an error.  3rd batter made an out - and Brad drew a walk.  1st and 2nd, two outs...without a hit.  Up comes Drew.  Drew hits a TRIPLE to right center field, plating both runners for 2 KEY two-out RBIs!!

After holding Phoenix scoreless in the 4th (with the inning ending on yet another diving stop by Sandro for a 6-3 inning-ending put-out), the Crew LAID THe SMACK DOWN on Phoenix --- scoring 5 runs to take a 10-3 lead.   How?   Coach McGrath pinch hit for Russell and got a single.  Then Dro hit a single.  Then Chris a double.  Next - Kevin and Ryan followed Sacrifice Fly balls.  With two outs and noone on, Brett and Rob Singled and then Brad doubled to bring them both home!

Phoenix went quietly in the 5th, scoring just 1 run.   The Crew scored 6 times and won the game in a REALLY cool way.    with 2 men on base, and holding a 12-3 lead (and no outs), the Crew needed to score just ONE run to invoke the slaughter rule and win the game.    It was the powerful Ryan D at the plate, with runners on 1st and 2nd,   Figuring that all we need is two Sacrifice flies, Mark tells Ryan to "take the big boy swing" - and Ryan launches an opposite field home run over the right field fence for a 3 run WALK OFF home run!!  DA-YUM!!!

Crew wins, 16-4

Crew vs. Los Angeles Honey Badgers

LA got 1 run in the top of the first, despite getting 3 hits and a walk (could have been much worse).  For the first time in the tournament, the Crew did not score in the first inning as they went down 1-2-3.  LA got none in the 2nd inning, and the Crew managed to get 2 runs across thanks to a two out,  2 RBI,  bases loaded double by Tim Yaeger.

In the 3rd and 4th, LA got NOTHING as Timmy was "on his game" pitching, and was backed up by some really great defense, highlighted by another 6-4-3 double play. Meanwhile, the Crew got  4 runs in the 3rd to take a 6-1 lead.  That inning was helped by two walks taken and a couple of hit - the key one being a ROCKET from the bat of Brad Mayeux to the left center field fence on 2 hops (which plated 2 runs)!

Ahead 6-1 in the 5th, the Crew gave up 2 runs which narrowed the lead to 6-3.  But the Crew came out on fire in their half of the inning, and scored 4 runs aided by  2 Phoenix errors, and a double from Ryan D.    With the Crew ahead 10-3, Phoenixmwent scoreless on the 6th and 7th innings, and the Crew ended up winning 12-3.
